Storage, external drives and CKRAW

CinemaKit · Updated:

Uncompressed RAW is far larger than HEVC or ProRes. Plan your storage before an important shoot, and test the drive or card you will record to.

What makes files bigger or smaller

  • Open Gate at the highest bit depth is the heaviest combination.
  • Lower bit depths, the 1440p and 1080p crop modes and Oversample reduce file size considerably.
  • Converting finished takes to CKRAW roughly halves them, depending on the scene, with identical image data.

Recording to external storage

On iPhone you can record to an external USB-C drive. On Android you can record to a USB-C drive or an SD card. Choose where recordings are saved in CinemaKit.

  • The drive or card must sustain a high write speed for the mode you shoot.
  • A slow drive can cause frame rate drops, dropped frames or a recording that stops on its own.
  • Record a short test take in the exact mode before an important shoot.

CKRAW or MLV?

CKRAW is CinemaKit's own lossless RAW format. Converting is optional and can be done any time after a shoot. Because CKRAW opens only in CinemaKit and CinemaKit Studio, keep the MLV version if you plan to use other tools like MLV App.
